September Newsletter 2018
It certainly has been another busy term with many opportunities for the students to demonstrate their learning and be acknowledged for their work. The culmination of the Performing Arts programs at the Annual Night of Stars is an outstanding achievement by all students and teachers.
It is also timely to reflect that the benefits of a Performing Arts program are varied and wide-ranging, providing students with a medium for self-expression and fostering confidence, resilience and improved interpersonal communication.
“Research shows that participating in music, singing and dance reduces stress levels, lowers anxiety, boosts the immune system, elevates mood, benefits posture, and facilitates rapid social bonding. “
Congratulations to all the students who represented the school at the recent Sutherland Shire Music Festival concerts in the choir, ukulele and dance groups. All students represented the school with pride.

They are often the ones to tend to students when they unwell and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions. On behalf of the school community we would like to thank our SAS staff for all the work they do.

Friendly Finn’s Farmer Fundraiser Report
On Friday 25th August Cronulla Public School held birthday celebrations for our school mascot Finn. The day had an underlying significance as Friendly Finn decided to donate his birthday money to The Buy a Bale Organisation who are supporting Australian Farmers in the current drought. Students were asked to wear mufti uniform and make a donation while a sausage sizzle was held at lunchtime.
Cronulla Public School was able to raise $1550 that has been put towards purchasing hay and water for farmers in New South Wales. The overall class winner for the highest donations went to 3D which entitles them to an additional celebration session during week 10.
The day was going to begin with a Friendly Finn visit to our morning assembly. However, Finn had made a wish that it would rain on his birthday and that wish came true. Everyone crossed their fingers that the rain would make its way west. These meant students had to make their way to class and celebrations were placed on hold until after lunch. At the conclusion of lunch over 400 excited students made their way to the cola for a special assembly. Finn greeted the students and thanked them for attending his birthday celebrations. He then thanked students, families and the local community for their contributions towards his Farmer Fundraiser. To Finn’s surprise a special tuna flavoured birthday cake was delivered and the students instantly started to sing happy birthday. Students then returned to their classrooms to begin Week 5 PBL lessons. Luckily for students, Finn had scheduled a visit to each K-2 classroom to support students during these activities. He handed out Super Surfers and asked students questions relating to our three school core values of Safety, Respect and Learning. The day ended with the announcement of Friendly Finn’s Colouring In Competition winners and all successful students were presented with a $5 canteen voucher.
Congratulations to the following students who were named Colouring In Champion for their grade.

Father’s Day Breakfast Photos
What a wonderful morning it was last Friday when the Fathers, Grandfathers and relatives came to school to participate in the Kite Building competition and Breakfast. The weather was perfect and all the kites flew very well even for the littlest people.
Thank you to the staff for their assistance on the breakfast table and BBQ. It was an outstanding morning enjoyed by all.
NSW PSSA Basketball State Knockout
The NSWPSSA State Knockout Team chalked up another win to move into the Final 8 Series of the NSWPSSA Basketball Knockout Competition. The team travelled to Penrith Basketball Stadium to take on a well-coached and drilled Regentville Public School. After a poor the start the boys were able to turn it around to defeat their opposition 56-40.
Regentville came out ready and had Cronulla on the back foot as they kicked away to a 10-2 lead. Mr Dean called a time out to calm the nerves and to reinforce the game plan. It was here where Isaac began to lift the team’s defensive efforts with a number of high quality steals that resulted in a successful fast breaks. Tyson entered the court 4 minutes into the first quarter and quickly made an impact forcing their players to take a number of tough shots. As the first quarter came to an end Jesse started to show his class by driving to the basket that resulted in him ending up at the line.
The second quarter was where Cronulla stamped their authority on the game by kicking out to a 15 point lead thanks to some nice finishes by Freddie, Sam, Jesse and Tyson. Regentville’s Coach placed plenty of pressure on Jesse with 2 or 3 players defending him whenever he touched the ball. This allowed Eden to step up and control the game with his composure and patience finding the unmarked player with some crisp passing. Cronulla hit a 24 point lead in the third quarter thanks to Anthony and Kai who continually ran the lanes to open up the floor for their teammates. Regentville decided to take a physical approach in the third quarter in hope of putting Cronulla off their game. Noah did an outstanding job marking opposition players that were considerably bigger than him and then turning around to mark players who were confident in controlling the ball. He made a number of great defensive reads before a slight injury forced him out for the majority of the second half. Momentum was with Regentville in the fourth quarter ,however, Cronulla was able to hold them to a safe winning margin of 16 points.
This result puts Cronulla Public in the Final 8 Series that will be held at the Sutherland Basketball Stadium on September 17. Cronulla will play Mount St Thomas in the quarter final. The result of the quarter final will determine who we play against later in the day. Preparations for the Final 8 Series kicked off with a short video session where Mr Dean highlighted a number of positive areas of Cronulla’s game. More importantly the boys were able to see some deficiencies that will need to rectify before the Final 8 Series in a few weeks’ time.
