2020 June Newsletter

Welcome back everyone!

We are now in our second week back from remote learning and I would like to again thank you all for the high level of partnership and goodwill from our parent community during this time. Thank you for all that you have done to keep your children engaged and motivated to continue their learning.

I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our dedicated and passionate teaching and non-teaching staff throughout the pandemic. They have worked extremely hard to ensure learning continuity for all of our students, and I would like to thank them for their innovative and inclusive teaching during this time.

It has also become evident over the last few months how important communication channels are between the school and home. If you haven’t done so already, can I please encourage you to download the SkoolBag app and subscribe to the relevant groups. As SkoolBag is used as our primary source of communication, it is essential that you have access to the app to avoid missing out on any important information. If you need some assistance setting this up, please contact the school.

Regards,

Trent Bridgland

Opportunity Class 2021 Information

Changes to the opportunity class placement process for 2020 Year 4 students

The 2021 Year 5 opportunity class placement process was put on hold in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation.

We now have a revised and simplified timeline for the OC placement process to ensure that students and families can have certainty about their placement as soon as possible.

The changes include:

  • A new date for online applications. Parents must apply between 9 June 2020 and 26 June 2020. Late applications cannot be accepted.
  • A new test date – Wednesday 16 September 2020.

To ensure fair and consistent assessment of students across New South Wales, students will be offered places based only on their test results this year – there will be no school assessment scores.

There will also be no opportunity for appeals given the tight timeframes.

For further detailed information I encourage you to visit (https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

A fact sheet regarding the changes to the Opportunity Class application process can be downloaded here – Opportunity Fact Sheet for Parents.

Winter Uniform

As the weather starts to become cooler it will be necessary to wear school jackets and jumpers.

A timely reminder to ensure all clothing is clearly labelled as it is very easy to misplace items.

Students should now be in winter uniforms.

Kindergarten and Year One Home Reading

Sunshine online remains available for home reading. Please check in with the class teacher for what level they would like your child reading at when consolidating their reading at home.

If you would like to change hard copy readers, please place these as usual in allocated class tubs on a Tuesday for Year One and Wednesday for Kindergarten. We will send home a week’s worth of readers on this day.

Please try to log your home reading in the yellow book and send them in on Tuesday or Wednesday in the home reading folder. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions you have about reading in the yellow books.

Year One Updates

Stage One timetable and homework booklet will be handed out Monday 1st June. Please see your teacher if you have any queries.

An updated timetable for Year 1 has also been sent home

Year One Sport: Students are to now only wear their sports uniform on Fridays.

Thank you,

The Year One Team

Kindergarten Updates

SeeSaw: Please check that you are signed out of the student accounts and back into your parent account on Seesaw. This will ensure you don’t miss any communication updates from your child’s teacher.

Kindergarten Sport: Students are to now only wear their sports uniform on Fridays.

Drop off and Pick up – A reminder for ‘one kiss one hug’ when dropping in the morning if you are entering the school grounds. Please do not enter the kindergarten halls. In the afternoons, K-2 will finish at 3.15pm and we ask that you leave the school grounds promptly and practice social distancing at all times.

Thank you for all your support and your hard work during the last few weeks. The kindergarten teachers are grateful for the amazing work that was produced during remote learning. We are blown away by the incredible progress the students have made while also managing this tricky time.

Thank you,

The Kindy Team

Our wonderful Kindergarten students are very happy to be back at school!

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Cronulla Public School students recognised Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week by participating in classroom activities.

Wellbeing Week

It was perfect timing for students to return to school full time during wellbeing week. During the week students engaged in a range of activities to help understand and support their wellbeing. Students wrote letters of encouragement to themselves and others and became mindful through sensory walks around the school. The whole school kept our minds and bodies healthy by doing yoga and had many brain breaks throughout the day.

We hope you all continue to support your wellbeing throughout the rest of the term!

All PSSA shirts from Season 1 (AFL/Soccer) to be returned to PSSA coach this week.

$20 deposits will then be refunded via the office.

Music

Thank you to all those families who supported their children with the online learning by encouraging the making of improvised instruments and recordings. There were many original ideas which was fantastic! I really loved seeing families performing music together which really took me back to my childhood where Saturday evening was spent around the piano singing.

Thank you for the countless photos and videos.

Several senior students excelled by creating their own compositions, creating a drumming background and recording their performance.

Congratulations to Luke H., Olivia M. and Willow J. all from 5B!

Library Report

Book Week has been postponed and at this stage will be held in Term 4 instead of Term 3 so plenty of time to work on costumes!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Congratulations to all the students who have already completed the Challenge. It has been difficult with no access to libraries but we’re back! There’s still time to complete the PRC so get reading and add titles to Student Reading Records. Don’t forget, this year due to Covid-19, 10 choice books are able to be added (usually 5). To add the extra 5, if you choose to, type “2020 bonus choice” in the ‘title’ drop down box.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 and TC all participated in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) last Wednesday at 11:00am. The story was ‘Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas’ by Lucinda Gifford. It was a bit sad that we couldn’t all join in together for the story but each class still enjoyed it in their classroom.

New Stock and Bloomin’ Books

The sad news is that Bloomin’ Books at Caringbah is closing (with only schools being able to order). The good news is that everything is 50% off so pop in if you get a chance and grab some bargains.

The BEST news is that we have bought some fantastic new stock for our library which is arriving this week!

Don’t forget to use your Academic Achievement Awards from 2019 asap.

Have a great week and keep reading!

Playground Updates

As previously published, Cronulla Public School P&C was successful in gaining $20,000 funding from the NSW Government Community Building Partnership Grant for “Four Sheltered Aluminium Seatings”.

These sheltered seatings will provide much needed shade and seating for the students and community members accessing the sports oval, basketball court and community playground areas. They will also allow safe and sheltered places for eating, watching games and other school and external activities.

The seating was supplied and installed by Felton Industries, in the April school holidays.

Rural Aid third quarter snapshots

Hi Cronulla,

Every three months, we release Rural Aid’s Snapshot and we are excited to share

with you how your generous donations have been used between January and March 2020, to make lives a little easier for our farming families and rural communities.

What a start to the year it’s been. As a nation, we have dealt with everything from

an ongoing drought and devastating fires, to a global pandemic impacting every

single one of our lives. Whilst striving through our own operational challenges in

these times, we are proud today to share the incredible amount of assistance we

have been able to continue to deliver, thanks to your support.

More information on how you have assisted our farmers and their communities is available in our latest Snapshot.

You are a part of our donor and fundraising family and we, at Rural Aid, thank you

for helping us deliver over $23 million in assistance to farmers and their communities,

since July 2019. We’re looking forward to continuing to distribute much needed assistance to our farmers and their communities through our proven delivery model, and we thank

A thank you to you, from John in Coolabah

Would just like to thank you for the Rural Aid Prepaid Country Card I received in the mail on Friday. It is greatly appreciated and will help with paying basic living costs and some farm expenses.

We have had rain here, 115 mm on March 6 & 7 and again this morning. Haven’t measured it yet, but a useful fall as a follow up to the big fall.

As we all know, when it rains it doesn’t solve the financial problems immediately. Together with years of low or no income from farming and the COVID 19 outbreak, it is going to take a long time to recover in many parts of Australia.

Once again, thank you for the card.

Regards

John – Coolabah, NSW

Stay safe. We’re all in this together.
