Newsletter August 2019
August Newsletter 2019
This week is Education Week. The theme for 2019 Education Week is Every student, every voice. It is a celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public education system gives students the skills they need in order to have and express a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens.
Our open day for Education Week is this Thursday 8th August and all families are invited to visit the school and join in the Education Week activities. The full timetable of events is included in this newsletter.
Please join us for our Breakfast by the Bay from 8.30am on Thursday. A gold coin donation will cover the cost for cereal breakfast for the children, fruit and a muffin. To reduce the use of plastic, students are asked to bring a bowl and spoon. Free tea and coffee will be available to parents who are able to ‘lug a mug’.
Term 3 is now well underway with many events scheduled in the next few weeks. Please check the newsletter and calendar for the latest details for each event.
Special congratulations to Miss Page who welcomed a beautiful baby girl into her family at the end of Term 3 and to Mrs Riley who welcomed her baby boy a few weeks earlier. We are also very pleased to welcome Mrs Gaylene Millar replacing Miss Peyton who is now on maternity leave and Miss Grace Rositano on the Year 6 classes while Mr Allum is on LSL.
Goodbye and Thank You Mr Banks
At the end of Term 2 we received notification that Peter Banks, substantive Principal Cronulla Public School, had been successful at interview for the new position of Leader, School Sport NSW.
The new role has required Mr Banks to relinquish his position as Principal of Cronulla Public School. As a result, the Director Educational Leadership, Port Hacking Principal Network, will begin the merit selection process for a new Principal for Cronulla.
Peter has been the Principal of Cronulla Public School since 2008 and whilst we are sad to say farewell we wish him every success in his new role. He has been an inspirational leader during his time at Cronulla.
Message from Mr Peter Banks
I write to inform the school community that I have accepted a role as Leader of the School Sport Unit for New South Wales and as such will be relinquishing my role as Principal Cronulla Public School.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the parent body, staff and most importantly the students for adding enormous value to my professional life since 2008.
Since that time there has been many changes in the school not the least of which is the significant growth in numbers from 102 to approximately 450. This growth I believe is a vote in confidence from the community that Cronulla Public School is a school of which they can be proud. The staff at the school are consummate professionals and have been a pleasure to work alongside.
I particularly wish to acknowledge the work of Susan Ross who has led the school over the last 18 months. Her drive and attention to detail have allowed the school to flourish and be well positioned for the next phase of this educational institutions life.
It has been an honour to lead the school for a significant period. I will always remember my time at Cronulla with pride and satisfaction.
All the best-thank you and goodbye.
Parent Afternoon Tea for Mr Banks
Parents are invited to attend a farewell afternoon tea at 2.00pm – 2.45pm on Friday 6th September which will be held prior to the student assembly. For catering purposes please RSVP to the office by Wednesday 4th September.
Farewell Assembly for Mr Banks
A farewell assembly for Mr Banks has been planned for 2.45pm on Friday 6th September. The children will have the opportunity to say thank you and farewell at this special assembly.
Parent and Community recommendations for the new Principal
A parent representative for the Principal panel has been finalised by the P&C executive. Parents had the opportunity to put forward their views regarding the qualities they seek in the new Principal and direction for the school at the P&C meeting. The nominated parent representative will now speak on behalf of the community at the Principal panel.
Thank you P&C
Last Friday night the P&C held their annual Trivia Night which again highlighted the wonderful school community we have at Cronulla Public School. A very special thank you and acknowledgement of the organisation and work of the P&C team and the fundraising committee to make the evening so successful and enjoyable. A full report is under the P&C section of the newsletter.

My Community Project
Cronulla Public School was successful in having the grant application for “Upgrade of the Cricket Wicket” included in the My Community Project public vote which opened 15 July and closes on 15 August 2019.
My Community Project is a NSW Government program providing funding for community projects, which are decided using a public vote. The program is made possible by the NSW Generations Fund. This is a chance to decide which projects in your electorate get funding.
Cronulla PS P&C is seeking funding for the upgrade of the cricket wicket which will include the demolition of the existing cricket pitch and broken fencing, removal of bushes, preparation and construction of a reinforced concrete slab, supply of new black PVC chain mesh fencing and the installation of synthetic grass over the area. Our aim is for the school students and local community to have access to new cricket facilities that will improve sporting programs and enhance opportunities for active lifestyle choices.
Landowner consent has already been received from the Department of Education Asset Management Unit and the Director of Educational Leadership.
So all we need is the funding to be allocated to us. And to do this we need you to vote for our project!
Family members, relatives and friends are also encouraged to vote for our project but they must reside within the NSW State electorate of Cronulla.
You can vote online at http://www.mycommunityproject.service.nsw.gov.au or at your local Service NSW Centre.
For more information on how to vote please refer to the Fact sheet for voters.

A reminder that students who bring a mobile phone to school are to leave the phone turned off in their bags. Students are not permitted to use them during the day at school.
The completion date is in sight for the front of the school. The final fencing, speed humps and line markings have been time framed and should be completed in the next few weeks.
We now have final approval to begin the building works for the new climbing frame on the side oval.

P&C Trivia Night 2019 – Mexican Fiesta
The Annual Trivia Night has been conquered for yet another year and I’m sure everyone is still recovering from not only a late night out but also those tricky trivia questions! All of the family and friends that came along to the event certainly got into the spirit of the night dressing themselves and their tables to create a fabulous Mexican Fiesta! We had a huge raffle to help raise funds for the school with some amazing prizes generously donated by local businesses and school families. Our major prize was donated by Bunnings Caringbah, a Jumbuck 4 burner BBQ and tool kit! Other prizes included an overnight stay at Rydges Beachside Cronulla, Gym Memberships from Snap Fitness and Anytime Fitness Cronulla, Taronga and Symbio Zoo passes, Endota Day Spa voucher, Swimming lessons, Restaurant and Cafe vouchers to name just a few!
This year’s event was held for the first time at the Cronulla RSL and was a great success. Thank you to CPS parent Michelle O’Leary and RSL Event Manager Michael Astill working with us to make it a successful fundraising event. We were very well looked after on the night by the staff!

Firefighters Visit Year 2 for Q & A
Last Thursday, Year 2 participated in two question and answer sessions with local firefighters to compliment their informative writing topic. In the morning, students listened to a presentation from Matt, a firefighter from Bankstown who is also trained in Rescue. Matt brought along equipment and activity books and answered questions that the students had written in class the previous day. In the afternoon, the students received an additional surprise when four firefighters from Cronulla Fire and Rescue arrived in a Fire Engine on the side oval. The children spent the afternoon participating in a presentation and exploring the various parts of the fire engine. They particularly enjoyed being given the opportunity to use the hose and climb inside the cabin.
